A Simple Routine for High Performance

Recently, I had the delightful opportunity to escape Melbourne’s winter chill for a sun-soaked, 10-day family holiday in Malaysia.

Nestled in the lush jungle of Cherating, our resort offered more than just a break from the cold; it provided unique experiences like releasing baby turtles and exploring mangrove rivers teeming with wildlife. But, as enchanting as these excursions were, the true highlight for me—amidst the joy of quality family time—was something unexpectedly simpler:

THE SALAD BUFFET.

Imagine a daily smorgasbord of crisp, fresh vegetables, a variety of healthy proteins, and an array of vibrant dressings, with each presenting a chance to indulge in a fresh, healthy creation.

This experience led me to ponder: why not recreate this efficient culinary highlight at home?

Thus, since returning, we’ve adopted a new weekend ritual that’s as nourishing for the body as it is for our family bonds. Every Saturday, post-sport, my family gathers around the kitchen island. It’s not just a chore (well, my husband might beg to differ to be honest), but a communal activity where we wash, chop, and slice a variety of vegetables.

This isn’t just meal prep; it’s a way to instill healthy habits and ensure that, just like on holiday, the option for a fresh, energising meal is always at hand.

This simple routine offers a multitude of benefits, particularly for executives looking to maintain high performance and energy levels:

1. Nutrient-Rich Meals at Your Fingertips:

By preparing a variety of vegetables and proteins in advance, you ensure that healthy options are always ready. It’s about making the healthy choice the easy choice.

2. Time-Saving During the Week:

Busy weekdays can undermine our diet choices. With your salad ‘ingredients’ pre-prepared, assembling a nutritious meal becomes as quick as grabbing a takeout burger, but much better for your health.

3. Cultivating Family Bonds:

Just like our holiday in Malaysia, the act of preparing food together strengthens relationships. It turns a mundane task into a weekly family event, fostering teamwork and communication.

4. Customisation for Personal Taste:

Everyone in the family can create their own perfect salad mix. It supports individual tastes and dietary needs, making it easier to stick to healthy eating without the complaints.

5. Educational Opportunity for Kids:

It’s a practical way to teach children about nutrition, cooking, and the importance of healthy living. They learn valuable life skills that go beyond the kitchen.

6. Sustainability for Your Diet and the Planet:

Using seasonal, locally-sourced produce reduces your carbon footprint, supports local farmers, and often results in fresher, tastier options.

7. Boosted Energy and Well-being:

Regular consumption of fresh, unprocessed foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can significantly enhance mental clarity, boost energy levels, and improve overall well-being—key components for enduring the rigorous demands of executive life.

8. Enhanced Focus and Productivity:

A diet rich in nutrients supports brain health and cognitive function, enabling better decision-making and higher productivity, which are crucial for leadership roles.

To get started, you don’t need much: a few clear containers for storage, a good set of knives, and a bit of creativity with your weekly grocery list. Rotate your selections to keep things exciting and align with what’s in season.

Incorporating such a simple yet effective routine into your life can transform not only your diet but also your overall well-being and performance. Whether you’re a busy executive, a health-conscious parent, or simply someone trying to improve their dietary habits, setting up your home salad bar can lead to a more vibrant, health-focused lifestyle without sacrificing flavour or time.

And who knows?

Maybe like me, you’ll find that a humble salad can indeed be the highlight of your day, not just your holiday.
